USA/CA: Calico Ghost Town
Calico Ghost Town is a well preserved formed mining town from the 19th century, a classic western-type settlement. Calico was founded in 1881 near a rich silver vein. At its height during 1883 and 1885, Calico had over 500 mines around it and a population of 1,200 people, complete with railroads, taverns, cemetery and bandits. The town was later abandoned and restored in 1950s to its exact old replica. Today it’s popular tourist draw, although it didn’t feel like a classic tourist trap. The buildings and restorations all look very authentic – there is a historic mine, a railroad, saloons and taverns, town call, church, and much more – a total dive into old old west.
