USA/IL: Chicago – Deepdish Pizza
The number one food to try in Chicago is the Chicago-style or Deepdish pizza which was invented here. Supposedly, it was invented sometime in the 1940s. The deepdish pizza is….. deep. It’s about 3-5 cm /1-1.5 inch in depth or height and as such is full of cheese and stuffing. In fact, it’s more a pie then a pizza and actually the deepdish pizza is baked in an iron skillet or a round, steel pan that is more common for a cake or pie. Interestingly, the whole order of ingredients in a deepdish pizza is upside down to a regular pizza – pepperoni or sausage or peppers (or all of the above) and then the cheese goes on top, massive amounts of cheese. The result – is super awesome! Giordano’s pizzeria chain is one of the best places to try it in Chicago, perhaps not the most exquisite and a bit mass market, but still authentic and fantastic.
