USA/MD: Assateague Island National Seashore
The mid Atlantic coast of the USA is lined up with long barrier islands, one of the most beautiful of which is Assateague Island. Most of it is protected under the Assateague Island National Seashore. It’s long and beautiful grey sand beaches and cold Atlantic Ocean are quite picturesque, but the real showstopper are the feral horses that live here. They are absolutely wild and roam free – marches, beaches, even roads. The horses are often called ponies since they are much smaller size then normal horses, but this is likely due to the environment and diet. You can spend hours watching the horses (and baby horses) and exploring the desolate beaches.
