USA/NJ: Sandy Hook
Sandy Hook is a peninsular (or more accurately a barrier island spit) sticking out from northwestern corner of New Jersey toward New York. It’s all part of the national park unit of Gateway National Recreation Area. The eastern part of Sandy Hook is lined with public beaches – North Beach, Gunnison Beach (clothing optional), and South Beach. In the middle of Sandy Hook, there is a very picturesque white Sandy Hook Lighthouse and the historic Fort Hancock, full of old somewhat crumbling buildings, fortifications, canon guns, and even two Nike missiles. Sandy Hook with all its attractions is the 4th most visited National Park Service unit with more than 9 million people by car, ferry, bus or even train.
