USA/NM: El Malpais NM – La Ventana Arch
Next state – New Mexico. There is a little known national monument here called El Malpais (meaning Bad Lands). Here you have several different section of both volcanic and natural features – many lava tubes caves, lava flows, and some interesting rock formation. The section I haven’t seen before was La Ventana Natural Arch – a spectacular arch. Although the arch area is surrounded by extensive black lava fields, the arch itself is composed of Zuni sandstone. The arch is massive and very impressive, especially after a short hike to its foundation.
