USA/SC: South of the Border
As you drive down Interstate I-95 in North Carolina, long before the South Carolina birder you start noticing giant billboards about Pedro, sombreros, and South of the Border. The massive and sprawling tourist trap welcomes you to South Carolina! The Mexican-themed travel stop has been a landmark of the southeast for nearly 70 years. While it all feels a bit outdated and probably fallen into hard times with COVID , it’s still worth a quick stop to shop for cheap Mexican souvenirs (there’s probably more souvenirs here then in entire Mexico). The site is also has a miniature golf course, truck stop, dilapidated motel, couple crappy fast food taco restaurants, non-operating amusement rides, and a 200-foot (61 m) observation tower with a sombrero-shaped deck.
