USA/UT: Grand Staircase Escalante NM – Toadstools
You want more otherworldly outlandish landscapes that belong on Venus or Mars rather then here on Earth? How about the toadstools at the edge of the plateau on the southern side of the massive Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument. The toadstools are rocks that fall off the plateau and onto the softer red or white Entrada sandstone beneath. Rains and floods wash the sandstone foundations away and the rocks end up getting elevated and balancing on top of pedestals. The entire area (about an hour hike to it) is absolutely surreal, with all the colors and textures and landscapes make you wonder – how come you can breeze without a helmet and bodysuit on this planet you are walking on.
