USA/WV: New River Gorge & Bridge
New River cuts through the Appalachian Mountains in a spectacular New River Gorge (interestingly, New River is actually one of the oldest rivers in the North American continent). The New River Bridge spans the two sides of the gorge and is one of the most photographed attractions in the state. The steel bridge is 3,030 feet (924 m) long and and rises 876 ft (267 m) above the river. When originally constructed in 1977, it was the world’s longest single-span arch bridge for 26 years (its the fourth now, but still the longest in Western Hemisphere).
