USA/Alaska: Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes at Katmai NP
The 1912 eruption left the Valley of 10,000 Smokes in the Katmai National Park – a fascinating valley of deep ash and crevasses. The eruption was the largest volcanic outburst of the 20th century, with the Novarupta volcano depositing over 13 cubic kilometers (3 cubic miles) of ash onto the valley floor up to 700 ft (210 m) deep. As you hike this otherworldly landscape, you feel like being on Mars.
