USA/CA: Ocotillo
Ocotillo (Fouquieria splendens) is a succulent plant that is an iconic sight in the deserts of the American Southwest – Sonoran, Chihuahuan, and Mojave. It is not a cactus, despite having plenty of spiky thorns. For most of the year it appears dry and dead, but in spring – it gets covered with green leaves and develops spectacular blood-red flowers.
