USA/TX: Bats at Bracken Cave
Bracken Cave gives you a chance to witness one of the most spectacular wildlife phenomenons on Earth – more then 20 million (yes this is the correct number) Mexican Free-tailed Bats live here. Every night, at sunset, the bats come out swirling from the cave entrance and fly in a neverending funnel into the night hunting for insects. This is the largest known concentration of mammals on the planet! It’s an incredible sight to watch this, with dozens of snakes trying to snap the bats in flight, and then the bats coming out in a massive flow out of the cave entrance. The bats come here only in April, after flying for over 1000 miles from Mexico, returning back south in October. The bats are estimated to consume over 4 tons of insects per night.
