USA/WY: Devil’s Tower National Monument

Devils Tower is one of the most spectacular natural monuments in the USA – a towering volcanic plug unlike anything else on earth. It actually was the very first national monument in America, establish by Theodore Rosevelt in 1906. It is believed that the tower was the center of an ancient volcano and the lava rising up to the ancient surface crystallized into a bunch of columnar basaltic columns while rising to the surface. The softer sandstone rock eroded with time, while the much stronger material composing the ancient lava intrusion remained. A circular trail leads around the tower and you can see it from all sides and in all lights. The tower is truly impressive and looks insanely massive when you are a tiny ant at its foot. You can also see people climbing to the top.
