Venezuela: Caracas – Barrio San Agustin Murals
Barrio San Agustin is the cultural heart of Caracas with its district Afro-Venezuelan vibe. A decade ago, it was one of the most dangerous and gang-warfare-ridden area in Caracas, best avoided at all costs. But since 2016, it was completely rejuvenated and turns in a major tourist draw with all the colorful murals on the steep streets, and salsa and percussion blasting from windows and doors. Local artists, international muralists, and neighborhood kids transformed the brick and concrete walls into an open-air gallery. Many murals feature drumming circles, Afro-Venezuelan portraits, and traditional festivals and celebration. Many murals also tell stories of the migration from coastal communities to Caracas during the mid-20th century.
