Venezuela: Cienagas del Catatumbo NP – Chestnut-Fronted Macaws

The lowlands of the Catatumbo river delta is also the prime habitat of the Chestnut-fronted Macaws (Ara severus). They are one of the largest species of mini-macaw and are commonly spotted perched in dead tree snags (tocones) along the riverbanks and swamps of Ciénagas del Catatumbo. They are actually mostly green with just a thin band of dark chestnut-brown plumage right above the beak on the forehead. They frequently use dead palm trunks or hollow snags protruding from flooded marshes for nesting and roosting. They form lifelong pair bonds and just like any other macaws – they are super loud!
