Venezuela: Cienagas del Catatumbo NP – Venezuelan Red Howler Monkeys
Cienagas del Catatumbo National Park is the prime location to see the rare Venezuelan Red Howler Monkeys and quite in large numbers. Unlike the howler monkeys in Mexico and Belize that are pitch black, these are have bright striking coats that ranges from deep copper-red to bright reddish-orange. There howler monkeys are among the loudest land animals in the Americas – have a massively enlarged shell-like bone in their throat that acts as a resonant amplifier and their booming roar can carry up to 3 mi/5 km) across the open waters and marshes of Lake Maracaibo and the delta. They are quite big (up to 10kg / 22 lb) and move in groups of 5-10. They only eat foliage and have very slow metabolism to digest it.
