Vietnam: Ho Chi Minh City – War Remnants Museum
Saigon was where the 20-year long Vietnam War ended when the city finally fell to the communists. Almost 4 million people died, including half of them Vietnamese civilians. It was a clear proxy war between USA and USSR/China disguised as a civil war between North and South Vietnam. The museum, one of the most visited in Vietnam gives a brutal description – from captured US military equipment, to unexploded cluster bombs and napalm, to gruesome photographs of disfigured children as the result of the use of Agent Orange and other chemicals. The museum itself is mostly photographs and narrative, while the military equipment – Huey helicopter, attack bombers, tanks – are on the outside. Many photographs are truly brutal…. and yet the proxy wars keep happening since – Afghanistan, Syria….. The museum used to be called “Exhibition House for US and Puppet War Crimes”, but since was renamed into the “War Remnants Museum” as relationships between Vietnam and USA normalized.
