Zambia/Barotseland: Mongu – Markets
Mongu is the capital of the Western Province of Zambia and also the capital of Barotseland. The town is the largest in the area and sits on the edge of the escarpment and above the vast Barotse flood plain. As such a central town, people come here from all edges of the province for a marge marketplaces – fruits and vegetables, household items, grains, loads and loads of small fish from the rivers and ponds of the plain, and everything else under the sun. Mopane worms for sale in big bags and colorful monkey oranges were the most interesting things (we tried the mopane worms in Zimbabwe before and we bought some monkey oranges to try here – weird taste of mango mixed with cement).
