Zanzibar: Former Slave Trade Market & Museum

The most solemn place in the historic Stone Town in Zanzibar is the former slave market. When slave trade was abolished almost everywhere else – Americas and Africa – it was still happening here in Zanzibar where thousands of slaves were shipped out by Omani traders in overloaded dhow boats until 1873. The quarters of former slave traders is now a museum as well as the grounds around it with several thought-evoking monuments.
