Zanzibar: Jozani Forest NP – Mangrove Forests
One unique part of the Jozani National Park is the extensive coastal mangrove forest. These mangroves are located on the eastern side of the park, near Chwaka Bay, where they thrive in the intertidal zones, adapting to the fluctuating saltwater levels and tidal changes. The forest includes several types of mangroves, such as red, black, and white mangroves, each adapted to specific salinity and soil conditions. These species are specially adapted to thrive in salty, low-oxygen environments. The black ground at low tide was teaming with really cool-looking mangrove crabs. These guys are super bright almost fluorescent red and blue, they are common in coastal mangroves of Zanzibar.
