Zimbabwe/Zambia: Victoria Falls Bridge
The Victoria Falls Bridge is one of the most famous bridges in the world. Conceptualized by Cecil Rhodes as part of his Cape to Cairo railway (which never came to be), the bridge was built in 1904 so that the falls would be visible from the passing train and the mist would spray the passenger carriages. The bridge was built in England and shipped to Mozambique and then transported to Victoria Falls. It’s a single parabolic steel arch, spanning the two sides of the Zambezi with the boiling cauldron of water beneath it. The bridge is the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia and border checkpoints are on each side of the bridge, with the passport formalities fairly simple (Zim & Zam are now issuing a joint visa if requested). Still, you take time to cross the bridge on foot, as the mist sprays you head to toe and the views of the falls are as good as from the national parks in each side.
