Bonaire: Donkey Sanctuary
Bonaire has an unusual attraction – a Donkey Sanctuary. Donkeys have been used on the island for several centuries for transporting salt (one of the largest exports of Bonaire). As technology replaced the donkey labor, many animals found themselves abandoned and starving. The Donkey Sanctuary in the middle of the island’s deserty landscape is now a sanctuary to over 100 donkeys that live here happily in retirement and are fed daily.
