China: Shanghai – Jin Mao Tower

And the last but not least supertall skyscrapers in Shanghai – Jin Mao Tower. It is 420.5m/1380ft high with 88 floors. While it was designed by an American architectural firm, everything about it is Chinese – it’s built to look like a giant pagoda and many elements revolve around number 8, the “lucky” number in Chinese culture (its octagon shaped, with 8 core columns, and 88 floors, and so on). The floors from 54 and above are occupied by the Hyatt Grand Hotel with 555 rooms (another lucky number), making it the third highest hotel (the other two are also in China). Staying here is an absolute must if you wanna see the insides of Jin Mao Tower which is absolutely stunning and futuristic – it’s like a cocoon with an empty middle. This cocoon-like atrium is actually second largest in the world after Burj Khalifa. And finally, there is the observation floor on top for one final look of the futuristic Shanghai.
