Egypt: Exploring Alexandria

Alexandria is supposed to be the European-like crown jewel of Egypt, but it most definitely underdelivered. While the main attraction such as Fort Qaitbay (see post 88), Pompey’s Pillar (an ancient city with columns and sphinx), Alexandria Library, and the famous promenade were all interesting, the city overall was fairly dirty, chaotic, and messy. Of you come expecting the greatness of Alexander the Great and the beauty of Cleopatra (both responsible for founding and building out the city), you are unlikely to find it here. Some of the promenade cafés are nice but it ain’t France or Italy.
