France: Vezelay Basilica
Often named as one of the most beautiful villages in France, Vézelay is on a steep heel surrounded by countryside and mountains in the further distance. You park at the bottom and then it’s a steady walk up a steep grade alone one cobblestone street peppered with old houses culminating with the spectacular Basilique Sainte-Marie-Madeleine, a 12th century Romanesque church that is considered one of the most important steps along the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela. The basilica is amazing inside and the views from it are panoramic as well. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
