Germany: Aschaffenburg – Schloss Johannisburg

I think I’ve done plenty of German castles on the last trips, but this one was along the way and the sheer size of it was immense. Schloss Johannisburg was built of striking dark red sandstone in 1605 for Prince Bishop of Mainz in the German Renaissance style. It’s beautifully located on high ground above the river, has four towers in the corners and one large central one – the main keep. Inside the castle – there are several historical and art museums, including world’s largest collection of architectural models made from cork.
