Marquesas/Hiva Oa: Atuona Black Sand Beach

Atuona sits in a beautiful crescent of the Ta’a Oa Bay surrounded by the highest mountains on the island of Hiva Oa and boasting stunning pebble and black sand beach. In fact, the bay is a crater of a sunk caldera and is very deep. The beach is not very swimmable since the drop off is huge and the rough ocean usually brings pounding surf.
