Mayotte: Climbing Mont Choungui

This volcanic peak dominates the Grande Terre island of Mayotte archipelago. It’s 594 meter (almost 2000 feet) high and rises almost vertically from the ocean. Climbing it literally means climbing as you are going up 70% grade at times. It’s a bit insane as you grab on to tree trunks and roots to pull yourself up while kicking rocks down the hill. You slip up and you will tumble down with those rocks. Spectacular 360 views of the entire island on top and the outer barrier reef encircling the entire island creating the world’s biggest lagoon.
