Mongolia: Ulaanbaatar – Winter Palace of Bogd Khan
Bogd Khan was crowned the emperor of Mongolia in 1911 when Mongolia declared independence from China and ruled for eight years. Before that he was the third most important religious person in the Tibetan hierarchy, just below Dalai Lama and Panchen Lama. The palace is the only religious structure from that period that wasn’t later destroyed during the communist rule. The palace consists of 8 temples that you walk through one by one, as they become bigger and more grand in ornamentation. Nearby there is also a museum with displays of Bogd Khan’s personal possessions.
