Russia: Moscow – Christ The Savior Cathedral

The Cathedral of Christ the Savior has a long and sad history. The original cathedral was built over a long period of 40 years in the late 19th century and became the largest Orthodox Christian cathedral in the world. Alas, it was completely destroyed on Stalin’s orders in 1931 (dynamited!) to make room for the grand Palace of the Soviet. The palace was never built however, and the are was turned in the world’s largest open-air swimming pool. Finally, the cathedral was rebuilt in 1995-2000 to its full white marble and gold glory.
