Spain/Castilla La Mancha: Consuegra – Windmills & Castle

Some of the most iconic pictures of Spain are those of white windmills on the hill ridges, made ever more famous by Servantes’ Don Quixote. While there are several windmill sites in the province of Castille La Mancha, the ones in Consuerga are the the most beautiful and photographed, especially since they stand next to a fairytale medieval castle. All the high expectations I had for this site – were totally met and exceed – the views are absolutely stunning. You can climb up to all the twelve windmills, one has a museum with all the equipment inside, while a couple others are mini-restaurants – have a couple of drinks and just make sure you don’t decide to attack the windmills with your car. The hilltop fortress is also awesome – dating back to Romans and then fully built by the Moors, and finally reconstructed by the Christians under Alphonso VII.
