Sri Lanka: Galle Fort

Galle Fort is the largest fortified city built by Europeans in Asia still remaining fully intact. Located on the southwestern tip of Sri Lanka, Galle was built by Portuguese in 16th century and then further rebuilt and fortified by the Dutch in the 17-18th centuries. It’s a complete city-fortress on a headland, surrounded by ocean on three parts and high walls on the land side. Many historic Dutch-era buildings, churches, clock tower, and lighthouse are within the fortress walls. The town is full of good restaurants and just outside is a big cricket stadium where apparently a big game was on.
