North Macedonia: Ohrid – Samuel’s Fortress
Towering above the Ohrid old town stands the massive Samuel’s Fortress. There was an ancient fortress built here in the 4th century BC by the Macedonians, And then the current fortress was built by kKng Samuel when Ohrid was the capital of the Kingdom of Bulgaria in the 10th century AD. It’s a steep climb up to the fortress from the waterfront of Ohrid and then you finally walk through a massive front gate. The inside is surprisingly empty but you can climb the fortress walls and walk almost all around with absolutely stunning panoramic views of Lake Ohrid and the orange-roofed old town of Ohrid beneath you.
