Rhodes: Monolithos Castle
Further west along the northern coast of Rhodes is an even more spectacular medieval castle – Monolithos. This one was built in 1480 during the crusades by the Knight of Saint John on top of the tallest cliff mountain 100m/300ft above the surrounding terrain. The staircase up to the castle is cut into the steep rock. On the top, while mostly ruined, the castle affords panoramic and sweeping views of the beautiful island of Rhodes and several small offshore islets.
