Rhodes: Rhodes City – Mandraki Harbor & New Town
Outside of the fortified medieval town lies the Mandraki Harbor with picturesque old windmills and Fort St Nicolas from the 15th century. On both sides of the harbor stand two stone columns with bronze figures of a stag and a doe (male and female deer) – the heraldic symbol of Rhodes. Further on is the new town (where Greeks were expelled by Ottomans from the medieval town). The Art Deco architecture here mostly was developed as a grid under Italian control and on orders of Mussolini who wanted to make Rhodes the best resort destination in the world.
