Ukraine: Hlyniany
The tiny village of Hlyniany just happened to be on the way and surprisingly delivered three architectural gems, including one of the oldest wooden churches in Ukraine. The strange-looking wooden Church of the Assumption dates back to the 13th century (and is under restoration now). It is famous for the icon of Crucifixion of Christ from the mid 15th century that has been moved to the nearby 19th century orthodox St Nicholas Cathedral – a beautiful yellow-colored church with multiple domes, a stand-alone belltower and spectacular frescoes all around the interior and inner ceiling of the domes. Finally, further down the street stands the 17th century catholic Holy Spirit Cathedral.
