Mexico/Jalisco: Amatitan
While less known as the town of Tequila, Amatitan can equally claim to the birthplace of the drink of tequila. In fact, most of agave plantations are around Amatitan and own of the largest and most storied distilleries, Tequila Herradura, is located here and is by far the highest employer. Amatitan is much less touristy then Tequila, and feels almost empty and abandon, and the Herradura distillery was completely closed.
