Mexico/Jalisco: Guadalajara – Templo Expiatorio
Templo Expiatorio del Santísimo Sacramento is not the oldest church in Guadalajara but is perhaps the most interesting. It took a whopping 76 years to built between 1897 and 1972 and is considered the grandest example of neo-gothic architecture in otherwise mostly baroque Mexico. This cathedral is famous for its over-the-top elaborate exterior and many European-made components – finely carved doors inlaid with bronze reliefs, exquisite mosaics from Italy, stained-glass windows from France, a unique German clock, and a massive German carrillon capable of playing 25 different melodies while figures of the 12 Apostles move around it (god is a deejay?).
