Egypt: Cairo – Souk (Khan el-Khalili)
Khan el-Khalili is an old marketplace/bazaar/souq area in the heart of the Islamic Cairo. People have been trading goods, making crafts in workshops, drinking Arabic coffee, and smoking shisha here since the 16th century. It’s a maze of narrow streets filled with souvenir shops, mosques, gold and jewelry outlets, old open air coffee houses, and prestigious restaurants – in other words – a total mishmash of everything. One of the oldest and most famous coffeehouses is Fishawi’s, established in 1773, naturally I had both coffee and tea here.
