Serbia: Monasteries of Fruska Gora National Park
Fruska Gora is a mountain in central Serbia that is almost entirely a national park (the oldest in the country) protecting beautiful natural features, as well as 16 medieval Serbia Monasteries (Fruska Gora is often called the Serbian Mount Athos). Having visited 5 monasteries in Fruska Gora before, this trip took us to 4 more monasteries – Rakovac Monastery (1498), Vrdnik Monastery (1575), Jazak Monastery (1736), and Mala Remeta Monastery (1550). All different and unique, some with remnants of ancient medieval frescoes, others with restored paintings and decorations and all active with religious services in full swing.
