Gotland: Rute Church
And a couple more Gotland churches… Next was Rute Church aka Rute Kirka, yet another medieval church in Gotland. Rute Kirka is one of the oldest on the island, dating back to 1230. While rather simple and austere on the outside, it is loaded with relics and treasures inside – medieval murals, baptismal fonts from mid-1300s, triumphal cross from 1260, tombstone with runes from the 12th century, and much more. Some of the murals on the walls we’re actually only discovered in 1951 during a deep restoration.
