Denmark: Hirshals Lighthouse
The town of Hirshals at the northern tip of Fenmark is where most of the ferries connecting Denmark and Norway arrive. The main attraction here is the beautiful Hirshals Lighthouse and the fortifications around it. Known as the Hirshals Fyr (aka lighthouse in Danish), it was constructed in 1863 on the orders of King Frederik VII. The lighthouse stands on a steep cliff on the edge of the sea, the structure is 35 m high, while the cliff itself is additional 22 m. All around the lighthouse are the remains of the WW2 Herman bunker fortifications – actually, altogether 54 excavated bunkers with gun, mortar and machine gun points, as well as former radar and searchlight installations – all in front of the beautiful seascapes.
