Bahrain: Muharraq & Pearling Trail
Pearling industry was one of the industries that put Bahrain on the map in the ancient times. Prior and parallel to that it was date honey or molasses production in traditional mudbasa earth presses. Both were produced in the small Muharraq island in Bahrain and made the island home to rich merchant houses and historic mosques. All of this is protected as a combined UNESCO World Heritage site known as the Bahrain Pearling Trail. The site includes several rich merchant houses like Isa Bin Ali and an even more impressive Siyadi House, which is super ornate and beautiful and even has a unique family mosque! Several offshore pearling beds are also part of all this, and finally a brand new visitor center built above the old prehistoric mudbasa date juicing earthwork presses.
