Copan is famous among all the other Mayan sites in Mexico and Guatemala for its amazing collection of carved stelae. A stela is a single piece of vertically erected slab of stone that is carved with some sort of inscription or art. At Copan, stelae are truly incredible and magnificently carved, the most elaborate in the entire Mayan world. There are nearly a dozen stelae dominating the main plaza in Copan, and there are around 80 total on the entire site. Most date you the mid t late 8th century AD.
