Nauru: Japanese Bunkers Along the Shoreline
Japanese occupied Nauru during the WWII – from 1942 to 1945. They built extensive fortification all around the tiny island – bunkers and gun points and built a state of the art airfield. They wanted to exploit the phosphate mining but never really got to resat the operations. The military fortifications were so strong that the US military decided to completely bypass Nauru and just let it fall when the Japanese capitulated. As you drive around the island, there are about half a dozen of gun bunkers, un-restored and abandoned all along the coral shelf coastline.
