Grenada: Abandoned Pearls Airport (Revisited)
This is one of the most interesting and bizarre attraction in Grenada. Originally, this was the country’s first airport, opened in 1943. However, the airport was abandoned in 1983 after the American marines captured it during the ill-fated invasion to suppress the budding Socialist regime. At the time of the capture of the airport by Americans there were two airplanes on the runway – a Cuban AN-26 (Soviet-made) and a Soviet AN-2. The airport was never used since as a new one was built in the south of the island. The wrecks of the old Cuban plane and the smaller Russian plane are still here, are all covered in tropical vegetation; the runways are getting overgrown, and the whole area feels like an apocalyptic post-war site.
