Morocco: Marrakesh – Ben Youssef Madrasa

Simple from outside, the Ben Youssef Madrasa is absolutely stunning in its interior. The madrasa was founded in the 14th century by the Marinid Sultan Abu al-Hassan and was later expanded in the 16th century by the Saadian Sultan Abdallah al-Ghalib. It served as a theological college and was one of the largest and most important educational institutions in North Africa. The Ben Youssef Madrasa is famous for its exquisite architectural design, which includes intricate stucco, carved cedar wood, and zellij (geometric mosaic tilework). The central courtyard features a large marble basin and surrounded by beautifully adorned walls and archways. The madrasa also has 130 student dormitory cells, arranged around small inner courtyards. The madrasa underwent significant restoration in the 20th century today it’s no longer a functioning school but serves as a museum.
