Gibraltar: The City of Gibraltar

Gibraltar is a tiny peninsula facing Africa just 17km away and separated from Spain by a narrow neck (which actually is an airport, so getting into Gibraltar, you literally walk on a runway). Captured by England in 1704, it has been contested by Spain ever since, including 13 sieges. Two referendums overwhelmingly rejected Spain as recently as 2006, and Gibraltar remains independent (except for matters of defense relegates to the UK). Citizens of Gibraltar get free housing, free healthcare, free education including university. The city of about 30k people lies at the bottom of the Gibraltar rock and you feel like you are in UK – fishnchips, stouts, red telephone booths. Only architecture and narrow streets give away its Moorish past. Gibraltar has a dozen churches, four synagogues, two mosques, and one Hindu temple. All crammed into a little rocky peninsula.
