Afghanistan: Gardens of Babur (Bagh-e Babur Gardens)

Gardens of Babur are perhaps the most important historical site in Kabul. The gardens were designed and developed in 1528 by the first Afghan Mughal emperor Babur (at its height the Muslim Mughal empire spread over most of today’s Afghanistan, India, some parts of Central Asia). Traditionally, Mughal emperors developed public gardens where later on they would end up buried in a mausoleum. The gardens are in the very heart of Kabul, on a sloping mountain side with panoramic views of the surrounding city. The main attraction – white marble Babur’s tomb – sits at the highest point of the gardens. There are also several palaces and other ornate building within the park. Afghanis come here to stroll in peace (no weapons allowed in) and take selfies. There is also a beautiful mosque just outside the park.
