Afghanistan: Ka Farushi Bird Bazaar
This marketplace is centuries old – from medieval times Afghani people bought and sold birds here at the bazaar of narrow lanes and overhanging stalls. Birds have been a huge part of the Afghani culture for centuries – some (canaries and finches) bought for singing, some (larks and pigeons) bought for fighting, and some for food. It’s a hectic place of bird cages, bird feed, bird sellers, and bird buyers. But it’s not just a bird bazaar – it’s a sprawling marketplace of everything else – meat, fish, vegetables. It’s also an overload of senses with meats being grilled and consumed and spices being sold. It’s packed with people – and being the only westerner walking through all this (with a camera no less) – you feel like the whole world is staring at you.
