Algeria: Djanet Old Town

Djanet is the main (and pretty much the only) town in the southern Saharan part of Algeria. Its old town dates back centuries and is a historic oasis town aka a “ksar”, full of traditional mud brick architecture along narrow winding streets set all around a hilltop. Djanet was founded by Touareg in the Middle Ages, further expanded during the Ottoman Empire, and finally developed by the French. In the heart of the old town is the old mosque, small and unpretentious but bearing huge significance culturally as the town’s beating heart.
